Inside Higher Education, History of Religion, Classics Resources

Inside Higher Ed

This free online resource is refreshed daily and is a useful substitute for the Chronicle of Higher Eucation, a much more elaborate weekly organ that is fairly expensive and the place where academics go for job searching. This URL will keep you informed on what is taking place in higher education nationwide--the trends in teaching, enrollment, accreditation, grants, affirmative action, government policies and regulations and on and on.

"Welcome to Inside Higher Ed, the online source for news, opinion and jobs for all of higher education. Whether you’re an adjunct or a vice president, a grad student or an eminence grise, we’ve got what you need to thrive in your job or find a better one: breaking news and feature stories, provocative daily commentary, areas for comment on every article, practical career columns, and a powerful suite of tools to help higher education professionals get jobs and colleges identify and hire employees.

Inside Higher Ed was founded in 2004 by three executives with decades of expertise in higher education journalism and recruitment. We believed that higher education was evolving quickly and radically, and that the time was right for new models of providing information and career services for professionals in academe.

Brain Gain: Mental Exercise Makes Elderly Minds More Fit

CEREBRAL SIT-UPS: A new, long-term study proves that mental training helps older adults retain their mental fitness.

"The mind is not as agile as it once was, even at the ripe old age of 34. Names elude me, statistics slip away, memory fades. This is just the first step on a long journey into senescence; and by 74, if I make it that far, I might remember practically nothing. That age is the average of a cohort of 2,802 seniors who recently participated in a long-term study to see if anything can be done to reverse this age-related mind decline. The good news: there is."

This is not a very new notion, of course, but what is needed is getting those who could benefit from mental exercises to try them out. Once we begin to appreiate that physical exercise is important as we age, then we must turn our attention to the mental exercises. The Greeks along time ago had it down pat with the simple saying, A fine mind in a fine body.

History of Religion (in 90- seconds)

In a rush to learn? This is a quick overview but it does put things in a nice historical perspective.

"How has the geography of religion evolved over the centuries, and where has it sparked wars? Our map gives us a brief history of the world's most well-known religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Selected periods of inter-religious bloodshed are also highlighted. Want to see 5,000 years of religion in 90 seconds? Ready, Set, Go!"

The Classics Pages

"You'll find well over 1000 pages of news, information, games and controversy about the life, literature, art and archaeology of the ancient world of Greece & Rome, and the latest on my Greek Harry Potter."

The Online Medieval & Classical Library

"The Online Medieval and Classical Library (OMACL) is a collection of some of the most important literary works of Classical and Medieval civilization. Get your OMACL gear and let your love of classical and medieval literature show!"

Dictionary of Phrase and Fable

"Giving the Derivation, Source, or Origin of Common Phrases, Allusions, and Words That Have a Tale to Tell. Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable comprises over 18,000 entries that reveal the etymologies, trace the origins and otherwise catalog these words."

A handy reference tool to bookmark.
